Our journey kicks off with an 8:30 am pick-up from conveniently located hotels in San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca.
We will traverse Nacional N° 38, guiding us to the magnificent Cuesta de El Portezuelo. Along the way, we'll pause to view the Monument to Felipe Varela, a homage to one of Catamarca's historical figures, situated at the start of Provincial Route No. 1.
Our adventure continues as we explore the Monument to the Aborigines and the “Plaza Yacumama” (Mother Water), significant landmarks honoring the original stewards of these lands and reflecting on our cultural heritage.
After covering approximately 18 kilometers from the city, we'll begin our ascent up the Cuesta de Portezuelo, a serpentine road stretching 20 km, featuring over 300 curves, offering breathtaking vistas of the verdant landscapes.
As we navigate the Cuesta, we'll pause at its stunning natural balcony, situated at 1070 meters above sea level, to admire the thousand shades of green it showcases. We will then proceed along the path known as the Old Route.
Upon completion, we'll continue our excursion to Piedra Blanca, a village notable for housing the Birthplace of the Esquiú family, recognized as a National Historic Monument since 1935. The interior features furniture and artifacts belonging to Fray M. Esquiú, including the bed, armchair, and various textile tools used by its former residents. Here, we'll have approximately 30 minutes for an internal tour guided by a local expert.
Our journey then progresses along Route No. 1, leading us to the Las Pirquitas Dam, celebrated as the largest reservoir in the province, distinctive for its unique construction materials compared to other reservoirs. We'll disembark for roughly 20 minutes to soak in the spectacular view offered by this location.
After 4 hours, we will make our way back to the city center, where you'll be dropped off at your downtown hotel.
