Tour Description
The Campo de Piedra Pómez excursion begins with pickup from your accommodation in Fiambalá.
This adventure is primarily a cross-country journey, adding excitement to the experience. Following a scenic mountain road, we will cross the river before arriving at the picturesque town of Las Papas.
Las Papas is a small mountain village inhabited by no more than 50 people, descendants of the Diaguitas, one of the region’s original peoples. Here, we will stop to explore the town and walk through its surroundings. On the way to Campo de Piedra Pómez, we will wade across the Papas River, crossing it more than 80 times.
After this stop, we will continue traveling for another 30 kilometers. Along the route, we will pass the Los Baños Hot Springs and Los Hornos Hot Springs. Depending on road conditions, we may stop to visit them.
Further ahead, we will reach Lagunilla, the name used by the people of Las Papas for the Alumbrera Lagoon. We will also cross sandbanks leading to the entrance of the San Buenaventura mountain range.
The effort of traveling almost 4 kilometers uphill over sand will be rewarded when we finally arrive at the impressive Campo de Piedra Pómez. Here, we can admire its unique geological formations and take in the spectacular natural beauty of the landscape.
After approximately an hour and a half spent observing, exploring, and taking all the photographs this remarkable place deserves, we will begin the return journey to the town of Fiambalá.
