On the return journey, we visit the historic Incahuasi Mine, formerly an important gold mine. We explore its remarkably well-preserved remains and learn about its fascinating history. Before heading back, we make one final stop at the Laguna del Caro viewpoint.
Tour Description
We depart from Villa Antofagasta by van, following Route RP43.
Our first stop is Paicuqui, an ideal place to admire the scenery and capture stunning photographs. This small town is characterized by low vegetation and grasslands, and features a viewpoint located more than 3,500 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the city of Antofagasta de la Sierra.
We then continue our journey along the Trapiche River, where, with a little luck, we may spot vicuñas, llamas, partridges, trout, partridges, and parinas along the way.
Our next stop is the Salar Hombre Muerto viewpoint. Located at 4,000 meters above sea level, this salt flat covers 588 square kilometers and is renowned for its lithium deposits. Its name comes from a tomb discovered at the beginning of the 20th century. From the viewpoint, we can admire the immense salt flat and learn from our guide about its ecological and economic importance.
On the return journey, we visit the Incahuasi mine, which consists of two sections that we will explore. Steeped in history, the site was first exploited by the Incas and later by the Jesuits. It is considered one of the most important preserved vestiges of the Hispano-Indigenous period in the Argentine Puna.
Before concluding the tour, we stop at the Laguna del Caro lookout point, the perfect location for one final photo session.
Finally, we follow Route RP43 back to Antofagasta.
