Pissis Balcony

We will begin this excursion in the morning, around 7:00 a.m., departing from Tinogasta. From there, we will travel along National Route 60, which becomes the renowned "Route of the Six Thousanders" after passing through Fiambalá.

This spectacular route crosses a high-altitude landscape surrounded by some of the highest volcanoes on Earth, many of which rise to more than 6,000 meters above sea level. During the journey, we may observe the native wildlife of the region, including vicuñas, guanacos, condors and suris, which are frequently seen along the route. We will also discover native vegetation adapted to extreme altitude, such as tola and yareta—plants that have been used by local communities for centuries. In addition to its breathtaking scenery, this excursion provides an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the area, from the ancient civilizations that inhabited these lands to the traditions preserved by its present-day residents. Although the Route of the Six Thousanders continues to Paso San Francisco, our excursion will take a 55-kilometer detour along a gravel road to reach the Balcón del Pissis, arriving at approximately 11:00 a.m. Our first stop will be Aparejos Lagoon, where flamingos migrate during the summer. We will then continue to Laguna Celeste, renowned for the intense blue color of its waters.

Finally, we will arrive at the Balcón del Monte Pissis, a natural viewpoint located at 4,550 meters above sea level. From here, we will admire the Pissis Volcano, the fourth-highest mountain in the Americas and the highest inactive volcano in the world, reaching 6,792 meters.

The return journey follows the same route as the outbound trip. However, as the day progresses and the position of the Sun changes, the landscape takes on new shades and colors. We will arrive back at the hotels at approximately 2:00 p.m.

On the return journey, instead of traveling back through Fiambalá, we will continue along Route 60 toward Paso San Francisco. Along the way, we will travel beside the majestic hills of San Francisco, Tres Cruces, Los Patos and Incahuasi. In addition to exceeding 6,000 meters in height, these mountains are home to endemic flora and fauna, spectacular landscapes, and sites of interest for tourists, geologists and local communities.

This section of the route crosses the Quebrada de las Angosturas, a foothills area distinguished by its multicolored mountains.

Finally, we will return to your accommodation in Tinogasta.
